Cate awoke the next morning feeling relaxed. She lounged in bed as the first hints of sunlight brightened the room. Cate rolled onto her back and closed her eyes, focusing on the tinkling music filling the room.

After a few moments, she rolled to her side, glancing at the piano-shaped music box perched on the edge of her nightstand. The music was beautiful. She reached out to caress the raised lid of the tiny piano as it played away.

A knock sounded at her sitting room door. Cate lifted her head to glance out of the bedroom door. She pushed herself up to sit and pulled her robe around her. As she slipped into her slippers, she hummed along with the music box.

She stepped into her sitting room as she heard the lock of her door disengage. The door popped open an inch. “Cate?” Jack called in.

“Come in,” Cate said, waving him into the room.

“Good morning,” Jack said. “How are you feeling?”

Cate shrugged, scrunching up her mouth into a pucker. “Another feel perfectly fine,” Cate answered, “but there’s been another new development.”

Jack’s lips formed an “o”, and he paused for a moment before speaking. “I’m not certain I want to find out, but I suppose I have to.”

Cate motioned for him to follow her. She stopped in the doorway leading into her bedroom. Both dogs leapt up at the sight of Jack, Riley’s tail waving in the air at him.

Cate motioned toward the nightstand.

Jack’s face whitened and he approached the tinkling object, staring down at it.
